Ascending the stage

Arangetram is Tamil for ascending the stage. It is the evening a student performs a full solo margam with live orchestra, offering years of training to the guru, the family, and everyone gathered. These are the dancers Nartanaalaya has presented.

What an arangetram asks of a dancer

Two and a half hours alone on stage. A live orchestra — vocal, mridangam, violin, flute, and the guru on nattuvangam — playing to the dancer rather than the other way round. The full margam, in order, from Pushpanjali to the closing Mangalam.

It is not a graduation. It is the point at which a student becomes someone who can carry an evening, and the beginning of whatever performing life follows.
